St Virgil's New Science Wing

About the Project:

St Virgil’s College is a Catholic Senior School for boys year 7-10, located in the well established northern suburbs of Hobart. It provides education in the Edmund Rice tradition with the new upgrade reflecting the schools emphasis on science and technology. The science wing has undergone some incremental expansions and refurbishments over the years. The school required new contemporary laboratories to meet increasing enrolments and developing curriculum. Together with meeting the specific needs of a boys senior school.

The brief was to provide 4 contemporary high level laboratory spaces, centralised dispensing and staff  and student amenities. The design maximises the cost effective use of the existing footprint whilst building on the master plan principles of the ‘main street’ and central courtyard, which are core planning strengths of the original 1960’s school design.

The project also included centralising the campus IT support hub. Replanning the labs into a cohort enabled the balance of space (former lab) to be converted to two new GLA’s. The lower level Art Faculty had been redeveloped to included a media/studio and support spaces, together with a large multipurpose Arts/Drama space.
